Risk Considerations for 2020 through the Lens of the Fed

Please join us for a conversation about near-term market risks through the lens of the FOMC, led by Orray Taft, Associate Consultant at RVK Inc.

In this session, we will consider the likely risks monetary policy and policy makers will be focused on in 2020, and discuss ways the FOMC may tackle these risks should they come to fruition.  Key issues will be the relationship between market participants expectations, asset market developments, and the FOMC’s ultimate strategy(s).  We will also focus on key measures and metrics followed by policy makers, and how to monitor them for signals that might prompt a monetary policy response.

U.S. monetary policy has arguably been the largest influence on asset prices since the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, and is likely to be a primary driver for the foreseeable future.  Developments with the fed funds rate, the changes in composition of the SOMA portfolio, and the level reserves in the financial system, are all continuously being discussed by policy makers, asset managers, economists, and the media.  However, honing in on the key factors that might prompt a policy response can be challenging. As such, having a base understanding of the way in which policy makers make their decisions might help us build-out our expectations for the coming year.
